Global & Cultural Experiences
session 2
1. You are a representative of the United States while abroad
What is meant by the "Ugly American"? As an American, is it important to portray a positive image while abroad? What can we do as visitors and guests in another country to have a pleasant stay while portraying a positive image of Americans?
2. Research study abroad opportunities
Go to the website of at least 3 American universities that you are interested in and look for the following information...
Begin by googling “UGA study abroad” or “Georgia State University Study Abroad”. The study abroad programs can sometimes be located on websites by searching "international education" or "international programs".
Find answers to the following questions and be ready to discuss next week.
1. What are your options for study abroad (where, type of program?)
Sometimes, the program is 100% immersion (you take college classes with students from the target culture). Usually, the study abroad program is for international students who come to the target country to improve their language. Therefore, you are in classes with students from around the world who are their to improve their language skills.
2. What are the possibilities for credit transfer from your study abroad program to your American university?
3. How much does the program cost? If you receive Hope Scholarship at your Georgia university, will Hope pay for part of your study abroad?
4. When would you do study abroad (junior year, senior year? after graduation? during the summer?)
5. Where would you travel while studying abroad in this program?
Begin by googling “UGA study abroad” or “Georgia State University Study Abroad”. The study abroad programs can sometimes be located on websites by searching "international education" or "international programs".

3. Price comparison for similar programs
1. For example, google "study abroad Madrid". Several agencies will appear. These agencies eventually will charge fees for placing you in a university and doing some paperwork. While on the website for an agency, research the fees to study for a semester or a year in Madrid.
2. Next, Google the same university in Madrid and determine how much it would cost to study there without using an agency.
Université de Grenoble fall semester 2017
Using the agency $17,000
Without an agency $900
Sometimes, the price difference will be thousands of dollars!!!
You may also want to consider studying abroad but independent of your American university. While you may not receive transfer credit for your classes, you will pay much less for the same education. Paying tuition for the foreign university is usually much less than tuition for American universities and you can still include "Fluent in Spanish" on your résumé.
